At the Financial Consultation yesterday a treasurer spoke of difficulty convincing an electricity supplier that the PCC was a charity to obtain the 5% VAT charge rather than 17.5%. This topic should perhaps get wider publicity in case there are others failing to obtain such relief who who do not know it is available. Please pass on your experience - perhaps with specific suppliers.

Powergen have been OK with charging 5% for gas & electricity. Their electricity tariff with much lower weekend charges is useful.

I had no difficulty recovering overpaid VAT & CCL from Southern Electricity a few years ago. Since then we have changed to Scottish Power (for electricity) and they have charged the correct rates from the start. Likewise nPower for gas.

Is the 5% VAT rate specifically because we are a charity? I have received bills from British Gas some of which are at 5% and some at 17.5% with Climate Change Levy added. When I queried this I was told that it was related to our consumption rate - in excess of the equivalent of 33 kwH per day for that particular quarter.

Can anyone help Norman out on this one?

And have any of you made savings by changing suppliers recently - see my new thread, Power Costs.

We were billed by Powergen in exactly the way you describe your experiences with British Gas. There is a 5% VAT charge if your consumption is at a lower kwH rate (which we experienced over the summer months). However when I explained to Powergen that we were a charity they recalculated our bills back over 3 years using 5% VAT rate throughout and removed the climate charge levy too. I suggest you go back to British Gas and explain you are a charity and start from there. Good luck!

Encouraged by this thread I took on British Gas again; like N W Briggs I had been told wrongly that beyond a certain level we had to pay 17.5% plus the CCL. British Gas have now conceded, sent me the forms, and yesterday I was delighted to receive a wodge of revised bills (and credit notes) for the last three years.
