We currently pay our verger for duties at funerals and weddings, but there has been a suggestion that we pay her for her general duties as a verger. Does anyone have any advice or experience of paying a verger?

We have a combined Verger and Parish Clerk. The verger role is purely ceremonial (he isn't considered as some do as a caretaker). As Parish Clerk he prepares marriage certificates etc. We pay him a small sum for his combined general duties in addition to the fees for weddings and funerals. Ceremonial duties apart from weddings and funerals are very light. Duties as Parish Clerk are probably an hour per month. We pay him £600 p.a.

We pay vergers (various) £20 to attend a wedding or funeral. Our Parish Clerk does the registers.
Two issues:
1. As we learnt at the recent Diocesan Finance meeting, the Charity Commission, to which all PCCs report now, requires that no Trusttes (i.e. the members of the PCC) are paid. This is one of the issues the CofE is in discussion over with the CC.
2. If you pay anyone more than £100 in a year, you will need to tell the Inland Revenue.

To clarify my previous posting following the excellent comments from Steve Wells, our verger is not a PCC member, although appointed by the PCC. And HM Revenue and Customs have been informed.

We do not "Pay" our caretaker. However I prepare an "Invoice" for her monthly payment which she signs and returns to me as a receipt. This means it is up to her to advise Inland revenue of her earnings and not the church.

So, is it OK to pay a PCC member to do a separate job, for example as an admin clerk for a few hours a week, if this is independent of their PCC duties?
