If in the last year you have managed to switch your electricity or gas supplier for church heating and have made a good saving, could you share your experience. What percentage saving have you made approx. and which supplier have you gone to? Your experience could be valuable across 800+ churches.

Nigel,
I just wonder whether we should be thinking here about more than minimising the impact of heating on church running costs. I would be interested in whether any churches have yet taken the bold step of putting the cost to the planet first, and opted for green heating and power solutions. I use renewably generated electricity at home but have not yet suggested that my church does the same! What reactions have others had?

Renewable energy costs researched by the diocesan Buildings Dept recently, with a view to switching to such suppliers for at least Church House - and possibly for the housing stock generally - worked out, if I recall, 10-15% more expensive. That is not to say some churches might not be able to and want to afford it. Hence we are taking part in the national church "Shrinking the Footprint" survey about which I will be emailing you all soon.

I have asked for an update on the Buildings Dept. research and will post it on a new renewable energy topic when I get it.

My original posting was because a treasurer wanted to reduce their costs! So still hoping someone might have done that.

We haven't changed suppliers but I have spotted that we were being charged 17.5% VAT as opposed to 5% VAT on our electricity bills. When I queried this with Powergen, they recalculated our bills back over 3 years which has been money worth having.

We changed from Southern Electric to Scottish Power in March 2004 and currently (pardon the pun) have a capped price agreement, paying 6.378p/kWh plus 17.58p/day standing charge. This expires in Sept 2007 and we are beginning to look at "green" tariffs - can anyone recommend? Annual usage in the order of 15,000kWh.

Rachel - I hope Powergen refunded all your CCL charges as well.
